We often put things off because of a lack of time or have no serious commitment. If you want to take those steps to a better you, however, dedicating time to bettering yourself will take work. Let’s discuss practical steps to reach your goals, whether personal or career-wise.

Why You Should Better Yourself

Taking practical steps to better yourself can lead to an array of opportunities.

Some benefits include:

  1. Increased confidence

  2. Personal fulfillment

  3. Improved wellbeing

It’s an investment in your future. It’s striving for a purposeful life. Now, let’s get into the seven practical steps of self-improvement.

1. Have A Desire To Learn

If you’re serious about bettering yourself, first you need to become a sponge and soak up as much knowledge as possible. Read books, listen to podcasts, watch documentaries. Take every opportunity to learn about the world around you and how it reflects on you.

The important thing is to stay curious. You can do this by asking questions and researching topics that interest you. If, for example, you’d like to learn more about your thought process and the cognitive distortions we all tell ourselves, pick up a copy of David Burns book, Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy.”

2. Have A Game Plan

The expression, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” has merit. Go in with your eyes wide open during your journey of self-discovery. Some reasons to have an actionable game plan include:

  1. Motivation: This article explains that you’re more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down.

  2. Direction: Instead of aimlessly trying to hit your target, a detailed plan will make sure you hit your target with purpose.

  3. Decision-making: When you have a plan of action, the waters become less murky.

So come up with an action plan and track those goals. Have fun while scoping your new direction.

3. Time Management

No doubt you live a distracted life. Things naturally get in our way of wanting to better ourselves. This is where the time blocking technique may come in handy.

Time blocking is dividing your day to certain tasks and hobbies throughout the day. If you’re trying to carve out time to build a new habit or skill, prioritizing tasks can be a big help. It may be difficult at first, but time will make it less so. Remember, this is for you, enjoy the process.

4. Bust Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Nothing grows in a comfort zone. Since you’re really serious about bettering yourself, you’ll need to shake things up a bit by examining your habits and lifestyle. Not only is this great for you, but it’s good for personal growth.

Stepping out of your comfort zone can build a life of fulfillment and opportunities. Keep in mind you don’t have to take huge leaps, do what feels right for you, while also being in an unfamiliar space at the same time.

5. Learn A New Skill

Learning a new skill can boost your creativity and give you a sense of accomplishment. Learning skills tied to your culture can also make you feel a stronger sense of community and belonging. Learn to paint, knit, or learn a new language, your options are endless, really.

If you’re more career motivated, though, learning new skills that can give you a leg up for career advancement can look like taking a class or workshop.

6. Focus On Your Overall Outlook

A pat on the back may be in order. When you stay focused on the positives and acknowledge everything that is going right in your life, (no matter the extent) this can increase your resilience and boost your mood and get you ready for the challenges you set for yourself.

Focus on your process, progress, and achievements you’ve made thus far. If you see room for improvement, get the pliers and tweak or adjust your plan, accordingly, maintain your positivity.

7. Stay Resolute

Bettering yourself takes some real effort so stay resolute and focused on your ultimate goals despite the challenges.
